Washington: The United States has revoked the visa of an Indian student accused of supporting the Hamas terrorist organisation, following which she voluntarily left the country, officials said.

Ranjani Srinivasan, an urban planning student at Columbia University, faced allegations of endorsing Hamas, which led the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to recommend the cancellation of her F1 student visa.

The US State Department revoked her visa on March 5, and she departed on March 11, DHS stated.

Authorities said she exited the country using a newly introduced mobile application designed for undocumented individuals opting for voluntary departure.

“Studying in the US is a privilege, and if that privilege is misused, it will be revoked,” US Homeland Security Secretary Christie Nyein said, adding that individuals leaving voluntarily through the app may apply for re-entry legally.

Columbia University has witnessed tensions over alleged racial divisions and protests by students with anti-Israel views. In response, former US President Donald Trump had previously ordered a suspension of federal funding to the institution.

Srinivasan, a graduate of Ahmedabad's CEPT University, had pursued her master's at Harvard University before enrolling at Columbia for research in urban planning, focusing on land-labor relations in small Indian cities.

Officials claimed she actively participated in demonstrations related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, leading to the visa cancellation on grounds of supporting violence and terrorism.
