Kolkata: Jadavpur University on Monday expressed concern over a violent clash between two student groups that left two teachers and several students injured.
Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya said an inquiry committee is being constituted to investigate the February 20 incident and assured strict disciplinary action against those found responsible.
The teachers were hurt while trying to defuse tension between members of Students' Federation of India (SFI) and We The Independent (WTI) on the campus.
Condemning the assault on faculty members as “utterly unacceptable”, Bhattacharya said physical attacks on teachers by students of the same university were “highly condemnable, unacceptable and unimaginable” and contrary to the institution's academic and ethical values.
Appealing for calm, the administration urged students to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful democratic processes. It reiterated the university's legacy as a space for intellectual freedom and constructive debate, calling on all stakeholders to maintain a safe campus environment.
In a subsequent notice, authorities mandated that anyone entering the campus between 7 pm and 7 am must carry a valid university identity card. Those without a JU-issued ID must present other valid identification and record details of the person they intend to meet at the gate.
In a related development, the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) convened an emergency meeting to protest the assaults and what it termed a deterioration of the academic atmosphere.
JUTA alleged that tension escalated near the Science and Arts buildings, where 12 to 15 teachers intervened. It claimed some students and outsiders later joined the clash, and that Professor Rajyeshwar Sinha and Professor Lalit Mahakudh were assaulted. Both were hospitalised and later discharged.
Following JUTA's demands, the university prohibited narcotics, alcohol and illegal activities on campus, barred trespassing and restricted gatherings after 8 pm, with limited relaxation during fests until 9 pm.
