Kochi: A private Christian-managed school in Palluruthy declared a two-day holiday on Monday following a dispute over an eighth-grade student wearing a hijab.

The principal of St Rita's Public School, Sister Heleena Alby, cited mental stress among staff and students as the reason for the holidays on October 13 and 14. The issue arose after the student wore a garment over the prescribed uniform, prompting objections from the school and a confrontation at the campus.

A PTA official alleged that parents were backed by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and that some members misbehaved with school authorities, mostly nuns. SDPI has not responded to the claims.

The student's father said his daughter joined this academic year and faced objections even at the school gate. He filed complaints with the District Education Officer and the concerned minister, adding that he may move her to another school if the issue persists.

The principal said the dress code had been followed for 30 years and that the student had initially complied. The incident escalated when the parents arrived at the school with others, recorded videos, and created a scene.

Teachers were also granted leave to prepare for exams starting Wednesday. General Education Minister V Sivankutty stressed that uniform rules apply to all students and urged managements to handle such issues responsibly.

BJP leader Shone George visited the school, expressing support for the management and alleging SDPI was stirring communal tensions. He criticised other political parties for not intervening.
