Puducherry: Education consultant Ramesh Prabha has said that several medical courses are available without the requirement of the NEET examination.

Speaking at the Dinamalar Guide program, he emphasized the importance of informed decision-making in education. "What is available on the internet is information, not knowledge. Students must explore their options, and parents should engage in discussions with them rather than imposing choices," he said.

He highlighted that while NEET is mandatory for courses such as MBBS and BDS, alternatives like the Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) do not require the entrance test. Additionally, he pointed out that although many students opt to study medicine abroad, only 20 percent manage to pass the qualifying exam required to practice in India.

Criticizing the pressure surrounding NEET, Prabha stated that the exam is more training-based than knowledge-based. "Suicides due to NEET-related stress are unacceptable. Students should not view NEET as the only path. Many alternatives exist," he added.

He noted that there are over 30 B.Sc. courses in the medical field and increased interest in veterinary and agricultural universities post-NEET. He also highlighted opportunities in fisheries sciences, engineering through JEE Main, law, fine arts, media, sports, and aviation-related programs.

"Selecting reputed institutions through Anna University counseling ensures quality education. Emerging engineering fields such as Computer Science, IT, ECE, EEE, and Chemical Engineering are in high demand," he said.
