New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has reconstituted its curriculum committee following a rap from the Supreme Court of India over a section on “Corruption in Judiciary” in a now-withdrawn Class 8 Social Science textbook, officials said on Wednesday.
The revamped 20-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) includes IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti, Indian Council of Historical Research chairman Raghuvendra Tanwar, and former National Law School of India University vice-chancellor R Venkata Rao, among others.
Earlier comprising 22 members, the panel saw the removal of three members following court directions, including Michel Danino and M D Srinivas. Former Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council chairman Bibek Debroy, who was part of the earlier panel, has also been dropped.
An official said the reconstitution aims to strengthen the committee. The NSTC is tasked with developing syllabi and textbooks for Classes 3 to 12 and revising lower-grade material when required.
The top court had taken suo motu cognisance of the textbook in February and imposed a blanket ban on its use.
