Salem: The Periyar University has attracted sharp criticism from various quarters due to unreasonable delay in carrying out various administrative and academic works, as shortage of staff members prevail for long period of time.

The University is running short of non-teaching staff that has over 70, 000 students enrolled in its affiliated colleges, due to which several regular works and distance mode of education activities could not be completed within the specified time period, according to an official source.

The university is yet to take determined efforts to appoint non-teaching staff to speed up the works. Some employees, working under the NMR (Nominal Muster Roll) category, were qualified persons.

The varsity did not make any efforts to regularise the services of such employees. But, till date no such efforts had been made, an official source said

The basic objective of the University was to serve the higher educational needs of the under privileged sections in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

But the due to shortage of staffs has made undue delay in the administrative and academic works, affecting the students.
