New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged members of the Indian women's cricket team, who recently clinched the country's first-ever ICC Women's 50-over World Cup, to visit their alma maters and motivate schoolchildren.
Interacting with the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, at his residence here, the Prime Minister congratulated the players for their historic achievement and offered them sweets. “In India, cricket is not just a game — it is an emotion. When the team wins, the entire nation celebrates,” Modi said.
Praising Amanjot Kaur's crucial catch in the final, he compared it to Suryakumar Yadav's dramatic catch in the 2024 T20 World Cup. “Over the next few days, visit the schools you studied in and spend time with the children. They will remember you for life. Choose at least three schools a year and inspire the next generation,” he advised.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the team at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In her message, she lauded the players for overcoming diverse backgrounds and challenges to achieve glory, calling their triumph a source of inspiration for women and youth across the country.
