Puducherry: The Department of Tourism Studies, Pondicherry University, celebrated World Tourism Day 2025 in line with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation's (UNWTO) theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” The programme highlighted tourism's role in promoting inclusive growth, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Director (SEI&RR), Pondicherry University. Prof. Sibi P.S., Head, Department of Tourism Studies, delivered the welcome address, while Prof. Sampada Kumar Swain outlined the scope of the event and Prof. P. Natarajan, Dean, School of Management, offered felicitations. Shri Steve Borgia, Chairman & MD, INDeco Hotels, was the Chief Guest.

Prof. Sibi emphasised that World Tourism Day serves as a reminder of tourism's transformative potential in shaping communities and economies. Chief Guest Steve Borgia said sustainability in tourism is now a necessity, urging students to create meaningful experiences while respecting local cultures, resources, and livelihoods.

As part of the event, a Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Practices was held, featuring resource persons from diverse fields including Ms. Sweta Mathur (Nilayana Studios, Sno Studio), Ms. Sahithi Divi (Consultant, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department), Mr. Sebin Philip (Gemking, Peace Garden), Mr. Gowri Shankar (Faborg), and Mr. Puviarasan (Outdoor Being).

The celebrations also included student competitions, an awareness rally, open mic sessions, and food and handicraft stalls, showcasing cultural diversity and creativity. The department reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible tourism that supports holistic social development.
