Coimbatore: With schools across Tamil Nadu set to reopen after the summer vacation, psychologists are urging parents to help children gradually transition back to a structured school routine, warning that a sudden shift could impact their emotional well-being.
Children, having spent over a month at home, have often drifted into a freer lifestyle, marked by irregular sleep cycles, increased screen time, and unstructured play. Experts say this break from routine can pose challenges when schools resume.
“After staying at home for weeks, many children enter a different mental space,” said Balamurugan, a psychological counselor based in Coimbatore. “Their emotional health, sleeping patterns, and eating habits are likely to have shifted, which could affect their school discipline.”
He emphasized that parents should begin reinstating regular routines — such as early wake-up times, scheduled meals, and a study timetable — at least a week before schools reopen. “These changes must be introduced gently. Children should be guided through open conversations, not scolded, especially when they show signs of irritability or frustration.”
Balamurugan also highlighted the importance of gradually reducing screen time and encouraging activities that simulate school-like environments, helping ease the transition.
With one week left before classes resume, he advised parents to use this time to realign children's routines and mental preparedness. “Consistency and empathy will go a long way in supporting children's return to the classroom,” he added.
