Recession, a time to invest in research

Chennai: Demanding times like recession must be used more creatively, focusing on research to develop new products, N. Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman of Cognizant, said here on Friday.
Speaking at the opening session of a three-day conference 'India USA global business and networking strategy conference,' he said innovation and research would play an important role in the future.
Mr. Narayanan said that another revolution was waiting to come about in the next 12 to 18 months with regard to improving production efficiency, reducing costs and reaching the product faster.

In a special address, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, State Information Technology Minister, urged the U.S. Consul General to set up of big R&D labs such as Microsoft in the State to create more job opportunities for talented and youngsters.
Andrew T. Simkin, U.S. Consul General in South India, said recent events such as the Mumbai attacks had affected the perception of safety among people. This problem could be solved through exchange programmes or by having direct interaction with the people a better understanding could be obtained about the entire situation.
He also said that the situation in India was changing due to the center’s positive action after the Mumbai terror attack.
