New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday asserted that the Sangh has been supporting reservation and will continue to do so until its beneficiaries feel it is no longer needed and can stand on their own.

Responding to questions on the last day of his three-day lecture series, Bhagwat stressed the need to end caste-based discrimination and said the RSS is working for this.

"The Sangh already supports the reservation provided as per the Constitution. It will always be there. Until the beneficiaries feel it is no longer needed, discrimination is over, and they can stand on their own, we will support it," he said.

Bhagwat noted that the Sangh passed a resolution in favour of reservation during Balasaheb Deoras' tenure as RSS chief. He recalled that initial discussions had opposing views, but the resolution was later passed unanimously.

He said the Sangh continues efforts to ensure weaker sections benefit from reservation, adding that accusations linking these actions to political motives should not occur.

Bhagwat emphasised that RSS volunteers stand against atrocities on underprivileged communities. “Volunteers should ensure justice to victims and prevent incidents from escalating into social conflict. If this does not happen, it is our fault and should be reported to local Sangh workers,” he said.

On references to the Varna system in Manusmriti, Bhagwat said religious leaders in 1972 declared there was no place for untouchability in Hindu scriptures. “We don't follow what is written in the books; people interpret texts differently. Leaders should create a new smriti reflecting all classes and sects and teaching practical conduct,” he said.

He added that the RSS is making efforts to promote social harmony. “Everyone is part of society. There is no high or low. Everyone has equal respect. This feeling has to be awakened. The Sangh is doing it,” Bhagwat said.
