A government high school in Thirukkandalam, a village 35 km from Chennai, that has produced district toppers in state board SSLC exams, is waiting to regain its life.

All students have scored more than 60 percent.Since its up gradation to high school four years ago, the school has recorded 100 per cent pass percentage. It has produced district toppers in SSLC in Tiruvallur district

Indhu, the school topper this year, has scored 458 out of 500 in the state board SSLC exams. The school, which has classes for class-VI to class-X, functions from a single hall. The school strength is 392 students: 43 are in class-X.

Four classes are conducted in a big hall with screen partitions while two are conducted under the shade of trees. There is no playground; no toilets and no drinking water facility.

'The school has just five teachers and a headmaster,As it does not have facilities to hold public exams, students appearing for SSLC exams are taken to Periyapalayam government high school, 12 km away, in a tractor, to write the exams'

Students from 3 km in and around Thirukkandalam join this school and are from families of farmers and agricultural coolies. 'I have petitioned the collector to improve the infrastructure facilities'.

I hope they will give a positive reply considering our good performance,” headmaster Jothimani said
