Chennai: Nearly 1,000 members of the Secondary Grade Seniority Teachers Association continued their protest on Tuesday, demanding “equal pay for equal work” and rectification of long-standing pay anomalies.
The agitation entered its 12th day, with teachers seeking parity for those appointed on or after June 1, 2009. An association official said teachers who joined service after that date receive a basic pay that is Rs 3,170 lower than those appointed a day earlier, a gap that has widened to over Rs 9,000 following successive pay commission revisions.
Protests are being held at the Directorate of School Education on the DPI campus in Chennai, while similar demonstrations are under way at district headquarters across the state, the official said.
Representatives of the association met the Director of School Education on Monday to press their demands, and discussions on resolving the issue are expected to continue.
