The Deputy Commissioner (Education) of the Chennai Corporation, M. Balaji stated that merger has brought down the corporation schools to 283. The corporation runs a total of 313 schools -139 primary, 109 middle, 38 high and 27 higher secondary schools.

According to the recent sent circular to the schools informing about the merger, the civic body has ordered the authorities not to admit new students in the 30 schools mentioned in the circular and has asked headmasters and teachers of the merged schools to take part in the counselling for transfer of teachers this year.

Some of the corporation schools merged with the schools close by are the schools in Chintadripet, Thousand Lights, Chamiers Road, and T.Nagar.

The vacant school buildings would be properly used for educational purposes alone, the corporation Mayor revealed.
