Coimbatore: Two government schools in Coimbatore district will soon be upgraded into Sports Schools of Excellence to provide specialised training to students aiming to compete at international sporting events.

The initiative is part of a state-wide programme announced by the School Education Department in 2023, under which two sports-focused schools are to be established in each district at a cost of ₹9 crore.

As per official sources, Seeranayakkanpalayam Government Higher Secondary School and one among the government schools in Thondamuthur, Ondipudhur, Mettupalayam, Sulur, Chinnathadagam, and Pollachi Municipality have been recommended for the upgrade.

A senior official from the District Education Office said the schools were shortlisted based on location, availability of open grounds, and suitability for developing sports infrastructure. “The aim is to create an enabling environment where students can receive professional sports training comfortably,” the official added.

Facilities for volleyball, basketball, and athletics will be developed on campus. Qualified physical education teachers will be appointed to train students during morning and evening sessions. Nutritious food will also be provided as part of the programme to support students' physical well-being.

The initiative is expected to enhance the participation and performance of government school students in national and international sports competitions.
