Varanasi: A youth today caused a flutter at the convocation of the Benaras Hindu University when he shouted slogans demanding revival of the students union and was slapped by an onlooker soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had finished his speech.

The youth, who identified himself as Ashutosh Singh, a BA 2nd year student at BHU, began raising slogans demanding restoration of students’ union at the varsity taking journalists, police and others present by surprise.

"Modi ji, please listen to the voice of the students community" he shouted as soon as the Prime Minister finished his speech and was getting off the stage.

He was immediately whisked away by the police personnel present there.

While being taken away, the youth was heard saying he had wished to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister but the university authorities denied permission.

As he spoke, a bystander slapped the youth and was reprimanded by the police and other onlookers who watched the drama unfold with amusement.

The commotion apparently went unnoticed by the Prime Minister or other dignitaries accompanying him as the visitors' gallery was a few hundred metres away from the stage.

The policemen who whisked away the youth said he would be "released soon without being booked for any serious crime."

The students' union in BHU was banned about a decade ago after the varsity campus was rocked by violence. The union has thereafter been replaced by a Students' Council, which has office-bearers elected by "representatives" from each class.

A section of students has been, however, demanding restoration of the students' union wherein the president and other office-bearers are elected directly.
