Chennai: Students should focus on mastering fundamental subjects independently before relying on artificial intelligence tools, Surya Ganguly, Professor at Stanford University, has said.
He advised students to first develop problem-solving skills in subjects such as mathematics, physics, writing and communication through independent learning and practice. AI tools should be used only after gaining a strong foundation, mainly for repetitive tasks and improvement, similar to using calculators after mastering arithmetic.
Ganguly said AI has shown strong progress in verifiable fields such as mathematics and coding, while advancements in areas like law and physics may take longer due to their complexity.
He noted that India has emerged as a key player in AI development due to its large talent pool but retaining skilled professionals remains a challenge as many seek opportunities abroad.
He said India has strong potential in applied AI, especially in building solutions for large populations using its IT infrastructure and digital ecosystem.
AI is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years and accelerate research, he said, adding that it may not immediately replace research and development but its role could expand significantly over the next five years.
He also advised students to build a personal brand and showcase their skills to enhance career opportunities.
