Man has failed to realize that the energy he gets to go about his daily chores swiftly, efficiently and briskly comes from the food that he eats.
Further, our health in the later days depends on the food we eat in the young age and the lifestyle we follow.
Many gadgets that were devised for the incapable and for necessity purpose, apart from making man lazy, it has also made him deprived of energy.
Depending on several gadgets for daily chores, man has made his life to move in brisk pace, forcing him to consume fast foods leaving behind healthy traditional foods that leads to several physical complications and ailments.
Regarding, good food habits and healthy lifestyle, a group of students from standard IX, Akshyashri, Shalini, Nevadha , Nevaga and Shruthi of PSGG, Kanya Gurukulam, Kovai, under the guidance of science teacher, S. Malathi carried out a detailed study by collecting details from 300 odd school students from various schools on present days food habits, economic situation, traditional foods, fast foods, awareness on traditional foods and fast food health hazards .
At the end of the study, the group found out that, fast foods are being consumed more as snacks and as small meals.
Furthermore, it was found that most of the students did not have the least awareness about traditional foods like Millets, Ragi, Cereals and Malts. In an age when students are required to consume more fruits, vegetables and greens, over 50 per cent of the students revealed hatred towards consuming of greens.
To add on, this group also revealed that through the consumption of traditional foods, lack of hemoglobin in woman could be rectified. Apart from that, the group also presented to the schools from where they collected details fro the study, a brochure containing the calorific value of various food substances and a banner to encourage students to consume traditional foods.
To encourage consumption of traditional foods, the group also made an appeal to the Govt. to reduce taxes on traditional foods and levy tax on fast foods.
They also stated that if the Govt. would take initiative on promoting traditional foods many students and parents’ health would have better health across the state.
