Palanpur: An 18-year-old girl from Gujarat, who was allegedly killed in a suspected honour killing, had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), police said on Wednesday.
The teenager from Banaskantha district was allegedly murdered by her father and two uncles on June 24 at her native village, said Danta division Assistant Superintendent of Police Suman Nala.
She had moved to Palanpur to prepare for NEET and entered into a live-in relationship with a man. “She appeared for NEET a few months back. It is unclear if she wanted to become a doctor or a nurse. As per the recently announced results, she cleared the exam with good marks,” Nala said.
Based on a complaint by her live-in partner Haresh Chaudhary, police booked her father Sendhabhai Patel and uncle Shivrambhai Patel for murder, as they opposed the relationship. Another accused, Naran Patel, has also been arrested, while Sendhabhai remains absconding, Nala said.
According to the FIR, Chaudhary, a married man with a child, and the girl had entered into a formal live-in agreement and travelled to multiple states before being traced to Rajasthan on June 12. The girl was taken back by her uncle, while Chaudhary was arrested in an unrelated case.
After his release on June 21, Chaudhary learnt the girl had messaged him fearing for her life. Before a habeas corpus petition could be heard, she died on June 24. Police allege she was drugged, strangled, and cremated the next morning to destroy evidence.
