Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) education in government colleges to ensure that students from rural backgrounds have access to emerging technologies, State Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian said on Monday.

Addressing a discussion organised by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) on the theme 'Impact of Generative AI on the Future of Education and Employment', the minister said AI was previously taught only in private institutions and was financially inaccessible for many.

“Now, under the leadership of Chief Minister M K Stalin, AI has been made available in government institutions, enabling rural students to benefit equally,” he said.

The minister also highlighted that Uyarkalvi Uraiyadalgal (Dialogues on Higher Education), initiated by TANSCHE, was bringing together various stakeholders to discuss and improve the higher education landscape in the state.

TANSCHE Vice Chairman M P Vijayakumar said the objective of the discussion was to explore how Generative AI is set to reshape education and employment, both globally and within Tamil Nadu.
