This will facilitate 2350 additional medical seats for the academic year 2021. As a result, the 69 medical colleges will offer 10, 375 MBBS seats - highest by any state, according to the National Medical Council.
Tamil Nadu has 37 government medical colleges offering 5125. The rest of the 5250 seats are available in 32 Private/ Self-Financing / Deemed universities.
Uttar Pradesh totally has 67 medical colleges offering 6928 MBBS seats and Maharashtra has 59 medical colleges with 9200 MBBS seats to offer.
All the 11 new colleges applied this year have been granted permission. This will add 1450 Medical seats this year. Coimbatore Medical has got permission to add 50 more seats this year to the existing number, said a top medical education official.
Every year 15% of UG medical seats from the government medical colleges across the country are handed over to medical counselling committee functioning under the directorate general of health services.
Admission to the remaining 85% of the seats are carried out by the state based on NEET merit and following rules of reservation.
