Chennai: Tamil Nadu has positioned itself as a key centre for aluminium manufacturing in India, driven by a skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and global connectivity. The state now supplies aluminium products ranging from sheets and coils to extrusions for sectors such as automotive, construction, packaging, and electronics.

Industry leaders say Tamil Nadu's reputation for consistent quality and reliable supply has made it a preferred destination for manufacturers seeking to expand capacity.

The upcoming ALUMEX India 2025, organised by the Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI), will highlight the state's growing role in the sector. Scheduled from September 10 to 13 in New Delhi, the event will feature over 200 exhibitors and is expected to attract more than 12,000 business visitors from across the aluminium value chain.

“Tamil Nadu has become a strong player in the aluminium sector with its combination of industrial strength, skilled manpower, and global connectivity,” said ALEMAI President Jitendra Chopra.

The Indian aluminium extrusion market, valued at USD 8.39 billion in 2024, is projected to reach USD 22.5 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 8.25 percent. Southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, are expected to drive this growth on the back of rising demand in infrastructure, renewable energy, and automotive sectors.

However, industry players flagged concerns over raw material price volatility, high energy costs, and under-utilisation of domestic capacity due to imports. India's installed aluminium extrusion capacity stands at 3.5 million tonnes per annum, but utilisation is about 2 million tonnes.

Chopra called for safeguards in trade agreements and policy support to boost domestic production. ALUMEX India 2025 will address sector challenges through sessions on technology localisation, green extrusion practices, MSME support, and global trends.

The event is supported by Hindalco, Vedanta, JNARDDC under the Ministry of Mines, and the Ministry of MSMEs.
