Coimbatore: Former Indian footballer Raman Vijayan on Friday urged the youth not to lose their lives by getting absorbed in mobile phones, stressing the importance of sports and physical activity.

Speaking at the valedictory function of a sports festival at Sri Sakthi Engineering College near Karamadai in Mettupalayam, Vijayan said that perseverance and dedication are key to success.

He presented medals and certificates to the winners of various sports competitions held during the festival.

Recalling his own journey, Vijayan said, “When I joined the football training camp, I told people I wanted to play for India. Many laughed at me, but I stayed focused and eventually earned my place on the national team. Today, I stand second among India's top goal scorers.”

He emphasized that every individual possesses unique talents and that such abilities must be nurtured. “Sports education should be given equal importance alongside academics. The youth should not get lost in mobile phones and waste their potential,” he added.

The Cholan team emerged as the overall champions of the event.

The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by college chairman Dharmalingam, with Principal Karthikeyan and Deputy Principal Akhileshwaran in attendance. College Secretary Punitavalli, Deputy Secretary Vidya, and several others also participated.

Professor Vijayalakshmi delivered the vote of thanks.
