More than 100 tonnes of seized elephant tusks, worth 105 Million US dollars was set ablaze in Kenya. This largest ever fire was carried out by the Kenyan Government, as a demonstration to shock the world into protecting endangered elephants. Eleven giant pyres of tusks from around 6,000 elephants, were lit by the Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta, in a ceremony in Nairobi national park on 30th April. African leaders and foreign officials, joined the ceremony and demanded a total ban on the ivory trade and protect the wild elephants in the continent. The move has been supported by a range of conservation groups.
