DigiLocker works like a bank locker, but in digital form. Just as we keep valuables in a bank locker, important documents can be safely stored in this online vault.
Introduced under the Digital India initiative, DigiLocker allows users to store, view, and access their documents anytime. Essential records such as Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, school mark sheets, and insurance papers can be kept safely in this virtual locker. It is especially useful for students who often need to submit verified copies.
To create a DigiLocker account, visit www.digilocker.gov.in and register using your Aadhaar and mobile number. It is also available as an Android and iOS application. Since the documents are stored securely on a government server, users need not worry about losing them. They can be accessed and shared whenever required.
For passport services, documents and certificates can be verified directly through DigiLocker, making the process quicker and simpler. Applicants using DigiLocker need not carry original or photocopied documents.
Security and Access
Many users have concerns about data security. Officials explain that the Umang app integrates several government services, including DigiLocker, allowing access to over 1,800 services. About 1,684 organisations authorised to issue certificates are linked with DigiLocker, and over 628 crore documents have been issued so far.
Documents cannot be viewed or downloaded without the user's consent. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology monitors security systems regularly to ensure strong data protection. Information stored in DigiLocker can also be accessed through 5.5 lakh Common Service Centres across India, including 4.1 lakh in gram panchayat areas, ensuring easy access for rural citizens.
