The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science for admission into the Masters Program.

GATE 2022 is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and six other Indian Institutes of Technology & Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru on behalf of the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Apart from admission to Masters program, GATE is also considered as an eligibility to various government scholarship programmes and employment into Public Sector Companies.    

Subjects: GATE can be taken up in Engineering studies such as Aerospace, Agricultural, Architecture & Planning, Biomedical, Biotechnology, Civil, Chemical, Computer Science & Information and technology, Production & Industrial,  Mathematics and Physics.   Apart from these specializations, new additions are Geo-Medical Engineering and Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering.

Eligibility: Should have obtained UG degree in the particular subject to appear for the specified examination. Final year students can also appear for this examination. There is no age limit to this exam. Any undergraduate student currently in 3rd year or higher years of any government approved program in  Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Arts/Commerce/Science is eligible to appear for GATE 2022.

Exam pattern: The exam comprises three sections/ parts with 65 questions to be answered for 100 marks. Questions would cover General Aptitude, Engineering mathematics and students specialisations subject. GATE scores are valid for the next 3 years.  The questions are of (a) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) (b) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or Numerical Answer Type (NAT). This computer based examination carries negative marks for MCQ type questions.
