India has 33 Sainik Schools operating under the Union Ministry of Defence, including Amaravati Nagar Sainik School near Udumalai Amaravati Dam, which was established in 1962.
Initially known as Sainik School Madras (SSM), it was renamed Amaravati Nagar Sainik School in 1975.
This fully residential school operates in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Government of Tamil Nadu. While primarily following an English-medium curriculum under the Board of Intermediate Education, students engage in a trilingual program that includes Tamil, Hindi, and English.
The school offers classes from grade six through higher secondary (plus two) and incorporates diverse activities such as horse riding, swimming, shooting, trekking, and training on aircraft and naval systems to foster discipline and skill.
Admission to classes six and nine is through an entrance exam administered by the National Testing Agency.
Those who clear this competitive exam receive quality public school education along with specialized training to prepare them for roles as officers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
