Coimbatore: Bharathiar University has emerged as a leader in intellectual property, securing 26 patents in the last five years.

With the central government emphasizing the establishment of patent centers in educational institutions, Bharathiar University set up its Intellectual Property Center in 2016.

The center has been instrumental in creating awareness and providing training on patents for university faculty, college professors, and students.

Patents have been registered across various disciplines, including Textiles, Computer Science, Medical Physics, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Physics, and Botany.

Over the past five years, all 26 patent applications filed by the university have been granted.

According to Sumathi, Director of the Intellectual Property Center, there is now greater awareness about patents among faculty and students, leading to an increase in applications.

She noted that while patent approval is typically a lengthy process, recent improvements have expedited approvals.

Since 2016, Bharathiar University has filed 43 patent applications, with 27 patents granted so far.

Among Tamil Nadu universities, except for Anna University, Bharathiar University holds a leading position in securing patents, reinforcing its status as a key player in research and innovation.
