Delhi: IIT Madras Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) has launched initiatives to position India as a global leader in chess through advanced technology.

Announced at the 'Sports Tech Start-Up Conclave' in New Delhi, the plans include enhancing fan engagement, providing anti-cheating solutions, and promoting grassroots chess training.

Sandip Pradhan, Director-General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), emphasized government support for start-ups in sports technology. "We are looking to support start-ups and work with them. The government will support not only research but also products," he stated.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the potential of AI and High-Performance Computing in chess training. "These technologies can aid players by analyzing numerous scenarios and optimal game plans," he said.

IIT Madras CESSA will introduce courses for sportspersons, coaches, analysts, and other stakeholders, with five new sports courses launching on NPTEL soon. Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Head of CESSA, emphasized the commitment to advancing sports education and leveraging technology to elevate India's chess status.

Future plans include AI/ML and Data Science courses with sports examples, a Bachelor's in Sports Science, and degrees in Sports Management. CESSA aims to create a digital hub for chess, develop anti-cheating technologies, and boost grassroots participation, involving local players to benefit the entire ecosystem.
