Mandi: Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has launched the BioNEST-IIT Mandi Catalyst Centre, supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), to foster innovation in biotechnology and healthcare.
With an initial funding of Rs. 5 Cr, this initiative aims to tackle India's unique social, economic, and ecological challenges. Located in Himachal Pradesh, the center will leverage IIT Mandi's strategic location and rich biodiversity to address both regional and global health issues.
The BioNEST-IIT Mandi Catalyst Centre will focus on two main areas: healthcare innovation and biotechnology. It aims to develop solutions for disease detection, affordable healthcare, medical devices, and regenerative medicine, alongside exploring drug discovery and bioactive compounds. Equipped with advanced infrastructure, the center will facilitate multidisciplinary research and foster a dynamic ecosystem through collaboration with regional stakeholders, industry partners, and local communities.

Dr. Satvasheel Ramesh Powar, Faculty-in-charge, emphasized that the center will support startups in biotechnology and healthcare, generating job opportunities and promoting sustainable development. The initiative will enhance entrepreneurial efforts by providing crucial incubation support, including funding and mentorship.

Established in 2016, IIT Mandi Catalyst is Himachal Pradesh's first incubator, offering a high-tech environment for early-stage startups. It has supported numerous ventures, earning 38 awards and creating over 4,000 jobs. The BioNEST-IIT Mandi Catalyst Centre aims to continue this success by addressing critical health and environmental challenges through innovative solutions.
