Coimbatore: Many government school students remain unaware of the School Education Information Center and Child Line, leaving them vulnerable to mental health struggles and issues like sexual harassment.

In 2018, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department launched the School Education Information Center to offer guidance on higher education and mental well-being.

A toll-free helpline (14417) was introduced to assist students, parents, teachers, and the general public with educational queries and mental health support.

However, awareness about this service remains low, particularly among students and female teachers.

Meanwhile, reports of sexual harassment by teachers are rising, prompting many students and parents to turn to the 1098 Child Line for help.

Government school teachers emphasize the need for better awareness, especially through notice boards, flex banners, and pamphlets. They stress that promoting the 14417 helpline can also benefit students seeking academic guidance, particularly during exam periods.

When asked about the issue, District Principal Education Officer Balamurali stated that awareness programs are being conducted in schools to highlight the helpline's importance.
