New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur, hosted a National Conference on 'Combating Human Trafficking in the Digital Era' on February 7, 2025.

NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian inaugurated the event, highlighting how digital platforms, including social media and cryptocurrency, are increasingly misused for trafficking.

Addressing experts, law enforcement officials, and activists, he detailed cyber-enabled trafficking methods, such as “Hook Fishing” (active recruitment) and “Net Fishing” (passive recruitment).

He emphasized public awareness, stronger legal frameworks, and technological interventions to curb online exploitation.

The conference featured two thematic sessions. The first, chaired by former IAS officer Bhamathi Balasubramanian, examined internet-facilitated trafficking and regulatory challenges. Experts discussed gendered dimensions, migrant smuggling, and the role of Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs).

The second session, led by Dr. Manish Mishra of the Chhattisgarh Human Rights Commission, focused on preventive strategies, victim support, and community engagement.

Key recommendations included amending the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, linking it with cyber laws, enhancing AHTU capabilities, and promoting self-reporting portals.

NHRC Registrar (Law) Joginder Singh emphasized the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration in combating trafficking in the digital age.
