Chennai: The Philippines has introduced a policy change benefiting Indian medical students pursuing MBBS degrees.
The House of Representatives approved an amendment to the Philippine Medical Act of 1959, allowing Indian and other foreign students to register and practice medicine in the Philippines after completing their education.
This development follows years of requests from India, recognizing the Philippines as a top medical education destination. Offering high-quality, US-aligned medical education at lower costs, with English as the medium of instruction, the Philippines is increasingly attractive to aspiring doctors.
Under this new provision, Indian students who complete their Doctor of Medicine degree from a Philippine College of Medicine recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), along with a 12-month internship, will be eligible to register and practice medicine in the Philippines. CHED will issue the necessary certification, ensuring a smooth transition for graduates.
Kadwin Pillai, Director, Transworld Educare and Chairman of Kings International Medical Academy, hailed the amendment as a landmark achievement for all foreign medical students in the Philippines.
The change acknowledges the high standards of Philippine medical education and provides a clear pathway to practice medicine locally or internationally.
This provision aligns with Indian Medical Commission requirements, allowing Indian graduates to practice medicine in India.
With 64 authorized medical schools, Indian students have compelling reasons to study in the Philippines.
