Coimbatore: Police conducted extensive searches in student accommodations across Coimbatore, targeting youths who chose not to travel to their hometowns during the Diwali break.
In recent days, hostels and private residences in Coimbatore and its surrounding areas were subject to police raids, where officers seized narcotics, including ganja, as well as weapons.
Despite police efforts to control the local drug trade, new suppliers continue to emerge.
With Diwali prompting many students and workers to return to their hometowns, a number of youths opted to remain in their rented rooms, raising suspicions.
Acting on this, police teams launched surprise inspections on Tuesday morning in several localities, including Ukkadam, Ramanathapuram, and Kuniyamuthur, specifically checking for prohibited drugs and weapons in residences occupied by students and young adults.
In Ukkadam, Inspector Rajkumar led a raid involving more than 50 officers split into four teams to search flats. Similar operations were carried out in other neighborhoods under the supervision of local police inspectors.
Officers conducted thorough questioning of the occupants about their reasons for staying behind during the holiday.
A police official confirmed that no illegal substances or weapons were found during the raid, which spanned 29 locations.
However, he noted that some leads were discovered, which are now under investigation.
