Chennai: The houses in Semmanchery and Perumbakkam Urban Habitat, is home to over 28,000 families, with a population exceeding 1.5 lakh residents.
Despite eight government schools in the area serving more than 3,000 students, a troubling pattern has emerged—many high school and secondary students skip school during January, February, and March, fearing examinations.
In the past five years, over 400 students have dropped out, with critics pointing to the absence of adequate support from schools to boost students' confidence and prepare them for exams. This has led to a steady increase in dropout numbers annually.
After this issue was highlighted in a news report, a special police team under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Karthikeyan from Pallikaranai took action.
The team has been visiting schools and homes to engage with students and their families, identifying the reasons behind dropouts and addressing them.
"This year, necessary steps are being taken to ensure all students appear for their exams," stated Deputy Commissioner Karthikeyan.
These initiatives aim to reduce dropout rates and foster a supportive environment where students feel encouraged to complete their education.
