Tiruttani: Over 2,500 students of Tiruttani Subramania Swamy Government College are putting their lives at risk by traveling dangerously on overcrowded buses, standing on the steps, hanging from window bars, and even sitting on the roofs despite repeated warnings.

Several students of Tiruttani Subramania Swamy Government College, rely on buses to commute from the Tiruttani bus stand to their campus, located 5 km away.

Despite the availability of over 12 city buses operating between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM, students continue to endanger themselves by engaging in risky travel practices.

Many students are seen precariously standing on the steps, hanging from window bars, or even sitting on the roofs of buses. Alarmingly, some students choose to remain on the steps despite available space inside.

Bus conductors and drivers have repeatedly warned against such reckless behavior, but their efforts have largely been ignored.

Past incidents have seen students sustain serious injuries due to these unsafe travel habits. Yet, the trend persists, raising concerns among social activists who urge authorities to intervene before a major accident occurs.

A Tiruttani transport official stated that over 15 buses are allocated for college students, but many deliberately avoid empty buses to travel with friends, believing that clinging to the bus exterior is a show of bravado.

He also highlighted instances where students have reportedly harassed drivers and conductors when confronted about their actions, creating fear among transport staff.

With safety at stake, activists and officials emphasize the urgent need for police intervention to curb this life-threatening behavior.
