Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs. 360 crore for the 'Tamil Pudhalvan scheme', which will provide a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000 to students studying in government and government-aided schools.

The guidelines for the scheme have also been published.

Currently, 3,28,159 female students receive Rs. 1,000 per month under the existing 'Pudumai Pen Scheme'. Based on this, it is estimated that 3.28 lakh students will benefit from the Tamil Putulvan scheme.

The Director of College Education has requested the government to allocate Rs. 1,000 per month per student, amounting to Rs. 393.60 crore per annum, along with administrative expenses of Rs. 7.87 lakh, totaling Rs. 401.47 crore.

After careful consideration, the government has approved the implementation of the current year's plan at a cost of Rs. 360 crore.

An order has been issued by the Social Welfare Department Secretary, Jayashree Muralitharan, in this regard.

Qualifications to Apply

Details of the guidelines mentioned in the ordinance are as follows:

Students educated in Tamil and English medium in government schools, from Class VI to Plus 2, and students who studied in Tamil medium in government-aided schools are eligible if they pursue higher education.
A website will be created for applications, and the money will be directly credited to the student's bank account.
There is no discrimination based on income, caste, or other factors. The institution and course in which the student is studying must be recognized by the government.
Students who have completed the 8th, 9th, or 10th standard and are studying ITI in government and government-aided schools are also eligible. Students pursuing higher education in non-recognized educational institutes through distance and postal mode cannot avail of the scholarship.
Any other scholarship recipient can avail of the benefit of this scheme. Students studying in other state schools are not eligible.
Any number of eligible students from the same family can apply. Only students studying in integrated courses are eligible for the incentive for the first three years. Students studying in educational institutions run by the central government can also avail of the benefit.
Incentives will be credited to students' bank accounts by the 7th of every month.
This initiative by the Tamil Nadu government aims to support higher education students financially and promote continued education among students in government and government-aided schools.
