Chennai: Tamil Nadu has achieved significant progress in the SDG India Index 2023-24, as revealed by NITI Aayog.
The state's composite score has surged to 78, marking a substantial rise from 66 in 2018 and positioning it among the top performers nationwide.
This achievement underscores Tamil Nadu's robust efforts and comprehensive policies aimed at sustainable development across social equity, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
In economic terms, Tamil Nadu continues to lead with effective policies supporting trade and industry, alongside initiatives promoting skill development and entrepreneurship.
The state has also excelled in healthcare, achieving a remarkable institutional delivery rate of 97.18% in 2023-24, facilitated by enhanced healthcare infrastructure and community health programs.
Environmental sustainability remains a priority, evidenced by Tamil Nadu's commitment to maintaining nearly 25% of its geographical area as forest cover, contributing to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
Government initiatives such as PMAY, Ayushman Bharat - PMJAY, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have played pivotal roles in advancing housing, healthcare, and sanitation goals respectively.
As one of the frontrunners among states and union territories in the SDG Index, Tamil Nadu looks forward to further collaboration with NITI Aayog to localize and implement SDGs effectively, aiming for a prosperous and sustainable future by 2047.
