Kumbakonam (Tamil Nadu): A Class XII student of a government school in Patteeswaram near here was seriously injured after he was allegedly attacked by a group of Class XI students, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School. Police said there had been frequent quarrels between students of the two classes in recent days.

On Friday, a clash broke out between the two groups at Therodum Keezhaveethi in Patteeswaram. During the altercation, more than 14 Class XI students allegedly assaulted the Class XII student and struck him on the head with a wooden log, causing serious injuries.

The injured student was first taken to the Kumbakonam Government Hospital and later referred to a private hospital in Thanjavur for further treatment.

Police said the 14 students have been lodged in a juvenile home and further inquiry is under way.
