Out of the, 3,462 students from 29 medical colleges who had appeared for the exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in August, only 2,341(67.62%) managed to pass the exams.
Among the colleges, IRT Perundurai Medical College had the highest pass percentage with 86.67% followed by Stanley Medical College with 85.33%, Coimbatore Medical College with 85.03% and then Kilpauk Medical College 85%.
Standing at the bottom, Annapoorna Medical College had the least pass percentage with 45.94%.
Drastic dip in the pass percentage was due more stringent exam rules adopted by the University. Now, students have to score a minimum of 50% marks in each paper in both theory and practical to clear the exam. Earlier, they needed an aggregate of 50% in practical and theory in every subject, revealed University officials.
Earlier, the university had withheld the first year MBBS results, which were to be announced on October 8, as it was awaiting for MCI’s opinion on whether it can increase the minimum marks required to clear the examination. On Oct 25, the university received a green signal from the MCI to go ahead with its new norms.
Speaking regarding the new pass percentage for medicos, the Vice-chancellor Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan said that the University will not reverse the results this year and believes this is one way of augmenting medical education standards.
