Delivering the 33rd convocation address he said India’s rich traditions of medical science and treatment are still relevant and need to be validated. People in the past have lived for long. Even now ‘I have seen many people in Nagaland living for 110 or 112 years, especially in villages’. Anything not scientifically established is not irrelevant, he said.
The Governor pointed to a 1767 medical report in Britain which referred to a system of small pox inoculation prevalent in India at that time. Also during the Maratha war with the British there are references to several people who had lost their limbs being restored of it, though there was no organ transplant at that time.
All these point to the fact that traditional systems of medicine cannot be ignored. The National Education Policy attempts to integrate the two which is how the future education in India should be, he added.
The Governor cautioned the young medicos not to commercialise medical practice and to develop the art of listening to the patients fully to get a comprehensive assessment of them.
The union government he said has launched many schemes to take the country faster into the future and all sections should march in line.
In this regard SRIHER’s vision for 2040 is laudable. He also said that the vision of one man Thiru.N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar has gone a long way in contributing to nation building.
He gave away 98 gold medals to meritorious students. Ms. S. Guha Preetha got four gold medals in MBBS.
The Chancellor Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam conferred the degrees and distributed the certificates to Ph.D., and super speciality graduates. The Pro Chancellor Mr.R.V.Sengutuvan graced the occasion.
In his report the Vice Chancellor Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan said 11 UG and six PG programmes were started this year with an additional 2346 students taking the overall tally to 7,639. 1801 students are passing out this year. 17 MoUs were signed with leading international and national universities.
During the year there were 638 publications mostly in indexed journals. The cumulative H-index for SRIHER is now 85 with 78,911 citations a few days ago. Four new patents were filed, 38 patents published and three were awarded. More than 60 research projects are being undertaken with extra mural support with grants totalling Rs.43 crores. Our future vision is to become multidisciplinary and enhance the status of the business school and faculty of engineering in keeping with the National Education Policy, he added.
