New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is scheduled to launch its advanced Earth observation satellite EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket at 2.55 am on September 4.

The satellite is slated to lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and will be placed in a geostationary orbit about 36,000 km above Earth.

The satellite is designed to provide detailed images of the Earth and help monitor natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. The data is expected to support faster assessment of developing situations and help authorities plan relief and rescue operations.

EOS-05 is capable of providing near-real-time images at intervals of around 30 minutes. The mission is intended to provide India with a continuous and distinctive view of the Earth's surface.

The earlier version of the satellite, GISAT-1 or EOS-03, launched in August 2021, failed to reach orbit after a malfunction in the rocket's cryogenic upper stage.

ISRO subsequently developed the new GISAT-1A mission using updated technology to replace the failed satellite.

The September 4 mission also marks ISRO's return to satellite launches after a seven-month gap, making it a significant step in resuming its launch programme.
