Chennai: Akashvani Chennai, the city's iconic national public broadcaster, celebrated its 87th anniversary on Monday with a simple yet heartfelt ceremony at its station premises.

Veteran announcers, retired officials and present staff gathered to mark the occasion, rekindling memories of the broadcaster's journey from its early days as All India Radio to its present role under the Akashvani banner.

Smt. M. Vasuki, Head of Office, and Shri Ramesh Babu, Head of Programmes, led the celebrations by cutting a commemorative cake in the presence of colleagues and invitees. Speaking on the occasion, senior staff highlighted the station's enduring commitment to informative, educational and cultural programming that has served generations of listeners across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

To mark the milestone, Akashvani Chennai aired a series of special broadcasts throughout the day, including archival clips, interviews with former announcers and curated musical features, offering listeners a nostalgic look at the station's rich legacy.

Established in 1938, Akashvani Chennai remains one of the oldest broadcasting stations in South India and has played a significant role in promoting classical music, literature and regional culture through the airwaves.

Staff members expressed pride in being part of an institution that continues to adapt to changing times while upholding its mission as a trusted source of news and entertainment for the public.
