Kallakurichi: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, is organising a two-day Mentor Reinforcement Training Programme on 'Learning Science via Standards' for science teachers mentoring Standards Clubs in Kallakurichi district.

The training is being held at AKT Memorial College of Engineering and Technology on June 24 and 25.

BIS, the National Standards Body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, implements various schemes such as ISI product certification, hallmarking for gold and silver jewellery, management systems certification and laboratory services to protect consumer interests and ensure product quality.

Inaugurating the training, Shri Jeevanandam D, Scientist-E and Director, BIS Chennai, welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of integrating standardization concepts with science education.

He explained that the 'Learning Science via Standards' initiative demonstrates how scientific principles apply to daily life through specially curated BIS Lesson Plans. These plans help students connect textbook theories with practical examples, strengthening their understanding of core science topics.

He also emphasized BIS's academic outreach efforts, including the formation of Standards Clubs in schools and colleges, which engage students through participatory learning, competitions and project-based activities focused on quality and compliance.

As part of this initiative, BIS has launched a monthly national-level online quiz competition exclusively for Standards Club members, held on the fourth Saturday of every month. The quiz aims to promote healthy competition and enhance students' knowledge of standards.

During the training, science teachers were briefed on club management through the BIS portal and upcoming activities to foster sustained awareness of standards among students.

The sessions were conducted by Dr A. Baskar and Shri Hariharan S from BIS's Resource Support Team, covering BIS's core functions and the role of standardization in everyday life.
