Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's National Standards Body, celebrated World Standards Day with Manak Mahotsav 2025 in Chennai, highlighting the theme “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals.”

The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and academicians to discuss the importance of standards in fostering sustainable partnerships and national development.

Delivering the welcome address, Shri S.D. Dayanand, Scientist-F and Head, BIS Chennai, said standards are “instruments of progress” that strengthen trust and enable innovation, safety, and sustainability to progress in unison.

Shri M.A.J. Vinod, Scientist-F and Head, BIS Southern Regional Laboratory, read the joint message from ISO, IEC, and ITU, acknowledging global experts' contributions to building consensus through standards that enhance cooperation and resilience.

Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General, BIS Southern Regional Office, highlighted BIS's outreach and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen stakeholder engagement and quality infrastructure.

Technical sessions featured expert talks by Shri T. Archunan, Director (Projects), Chennai Metro Rail Limited; Dr. Rupen Goswami, Professor, IIT Madras; and Shri Jeyannathann Karunanithi, International Water Association, who discussed the role of standards in sustainable growth across sectors.

The event also saw the presentation of the “Manak Veer Awards” to individuals and institutions from industry, academia, and media for their contributions to promoting standardization and quality awareness.

The celebration concluded with a presentation by Shri Muninarayana R, Scientist-E, outlining BIS initiatives in certification, hallmarking, testing, and consumer outreach.
