Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, launched a two-day Mentor Reinforcement Training Programme on “Learning Science via Standards” for science teachers mentoring Standards Clubs across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts.

The training is being held at Turyaa Chennai on June 12 and 13, 2025.

Welcoming the 70 participating teachers, Shri Gowththam B.J., Scientist-D and Joint Director, explained that the initiative aims to connect scientific learning with real-world applications through standards.

The programme uses specially designed BIS Lesson Plans to demonstrate how scientific principles are embedded in everyday products, enhancing classroom understanding and promoting applied learning. He also announced a new monthly national-level quiz competition for students of Standards Clubs, designed to stimulate interest and engagement.

Delivering the inaugural address, Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F and Senior Director & Head of the Chennai Branch, emphasized the role of BIS in national standardization and the significance of educational institutions in spreading awareness about quality and compliance.

She highlighted that the Standards Clubs provide students with experiential learning opportunities through projects, competitions, and interactive sessions, thereby nurturing future contributors to India's quality ecosystem.

The training includes sessions on BIS's core functions—standardization, certification, testing, hallmarking, and academic outreach—conducted by Shri Gowththam and the BIS Resource Support Team.

Teachers are also being guided on managing club activities via the BIS portal and executing new initiatives.

The programme concludes on June 13 evening and forms part of BIS's broader strategy to embed quality consciousness among students and educators.

BIS operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and is the National Standards Body of India, promoting consumer protection through standardization and certification.
