Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Chennai Branch organized a “Manak Manthan” session on protective helmets for bicycles, skateboards, and roller skates at St. Joseph's College of Engineering, Chennai, on Tuesday.

The event focused on the newly introduced Indian Standard IS 18808, which outlines safety norms for non-motorized mobility gear.

Welcoming over 150 stakeholders, BIS Senior Director and Chennai Branch Head Smt. G Bhavani emphasized the bureau's role in enhancing public safety through standardization. She highlighted that IS 18808 addresses the rising popularity of cycling and skating among youth and commuters and is aimed at improving head protection through robust safety specifications.

Bhavani also announced that the government is considering bringing such helmets under BIS Compulsory Certification. This move would mandate adherence to IS 18808, ensuring manufacturers meet uniform safety benchmarks.

Chief Guest Dr. C. Sharmeela, Professor, Anna University, lauded BIS for conducting monthly “Manak Manthan” sessions to foster dialogue on standards among industries, trade bodies, regulators, and academia.

In the technical session, BIS Scientist Shri B J Gowththam detailed IS 18808's requirements on impact resistance, strap durability, fit, ventilation, and material quality. He noted that ISI-marked helmets compliant with the standard are expected to reach markets soon.

Earlier, Scientist Shri Muni Narayana briefed attendees on BIS activities and the E-BIS portal.

As India moves toward safer, sustainable commuting practices, IS 18808 marks a significant step in standardizing helmet safety and protecting lives.
