Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, conducted a one-day training programme on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, 2013, at its Southern Regional Office and Chennai Branch on Wednesday.

Organised by the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS), Noida, the session aimed to enhance awareness among BIS employees about workplace safety, employee rights, and mechanisms available under the POSH Act.

Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General (Southern Region), delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of fostering a workplace rooted in dignity and respect. “Ensuring a workplace free from sexual harassment is not just a legal mandate but a moral responsibility,” she said.

In her inaugural address, Ms. Chitra Gupta, Deputy Director General (Hallmarking & Training), New Delhi, stressed the significance of the POSH Act in safeguarding employees. “It is essential that every individual not only understands their rights but also their role in upholding a safe workplace,” she remarked.

The training was led by Dr. J. Vasanthakumari, who conducted interactive sessions on the legal framework, definitions, complaint procedures, and the critical role of the Internal Committee (IC). Participants engaged in case studies and scenario-based exercises to understand various forms of harassment — verbal, non-verbal, physical, and psychological.

The programme also underscored the importance of preventive measures, bystander intervention, and cultivating a culture of safety and inclusivity at the workplace. A wrap-up and feedback session marked the conclusion of the day-long event, reaffirming BIS's commitment to ensuring a respectful and harassment-free environment for all its employees.
