Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has streamlined procedures to obtain ISI certification, enabling approvals within 30 days, with a maximum timeline of 90 days, BIS Chennai Director Bhavani said on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Chennai on World Consumer Awareness Day, she emphasized BIS's role in consumer protection and quality assurance. The organization is actively conducting awareness programs in colleges and public spaces, including Manak Manthan for students and BIS Connect for consumers and manufacturers.

Consumers can verify product quality and expiry details using the BIS app, she noted. India currently has over 22,600 standards, with 769 products requiring mandatory certification. ISI certification for toys has been compulsory since January 1, 2021, and a six-digit hallmark is mandatory for gold jewellery.

BIS has intensified enforcement, recently seizing 3,376 uncertified products from Amazon and Flipkart warehouses. It has conducted 24 tests in 2022-23, 13 in 2023-24, and nine so far in 2024-25.

She also highlighted that schools were recently certified under ISO 9001:2015 as part of Tamil Nadu's Namma School, Namma Ooru scheme.

Joint Director Gawtham, Management Certification System Director Venkata Narayanan, and PIB Deputy Director J. Vijayalakshmi attended the event.
