New Delhi: Union Rural Development and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday urged citizens to prioritise indigenous products and place “Nation First”, while lauding self-help group (SHG) women for their contribution in reviving the country's handloom tradition.

Speaking at a virtual interaction with lakhs of SHG members on the occasion of National Handloom Day from Krishi Bhawan here, Chouhan described handloom as a symbol of self-reliance and a “weapon of non-violent struggle” during the freedom movement.

“Women embody power and creativity. The remarkable artistry of rural artisans is recognised globally,” he said, adding that SHG women have played a vital role in preserving local art, culture and folk traditions.

The minister acknowledged concerns over marketing and branding of products and assured concrete steps, including design-oriented training, to boost competitiveness. He urged members to maintain high quality standards to expand their market reach.

Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for swadeshi, Chouhan asserted that “no compromises will be made on national interests, even at personal cost”. He appealed to people to buy Indian-made goods during festivals like Raksha Bandhan to strengthen the economy under the 'Vocal for Local' campaign.

Highlighting the success of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), Chouhan said over 1.5 crore women have become “Lakhpati Didis” (earning more than ₹1 lakh annually) and the target is to increase the number to 3 crore.

The programme, attended by Minister of State Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani and senior officials, concluded with Chouhan reaffirming a pledge to adopt indigenous products and enhance national pride. He later visited stalls set up by SHG women and appreciated their work.
